The Mid Region
Torrevieja
The town of Torrevieja lies approx. 45 kms. south of Alicante,
the towering pyramids of white salt and the echoesof habaneras
floating in the air are two of the main things that seem to remain
in the memories of visitors to this area, but Torrevieja has much
more to offer as it has a long seafaring tradition, a privileged
climate, excellent beaches and modern infrastructure which have made
it one of the major attractions on the Mediterranean coastline. The
coast is lined with beaches of fine sand, providing a complete range
of beach activities. Wander along the main Promenade of Torrevieja
and enjoy the atmosphere of the evening flea market or sit at one of
the pavement cafes and watch the world go by.
Torrevieja's festive calendar starts in February with the happy
sounds of the carnival heralding in the Spring. Holy Week
processions up and down the streets of the town during May, at which
time Torreviejans come onto the streets to dance and taste the
finest sherries from the South. During the Summer especially on July
16th , the Feast Day of our Lady of Carmelo the patron Saint of
Sailors is commemorated with a traditional sea and land procession.
October brings the High Feast of La Mata. The feast of the
Immaculate Conception is held 1st -17th December saying farewell to
the year with flower offerings, competitions and fireworks.
Take a boat ride to the island of Tabarca where scuba diving is a
pleasure or sail along the coast. Boat rides are available from the
port of Torrevieja, as well as fishing trips. For the more energetic
several golf courses, including Villa Martin, Campoamor, Las Ramblas
and Quesada are available. Torrevieja has a superb selection of
sports for the enthusiast, including sailing, diving, tennis, bowls,
athletics, football and a gymnasium.
Monuments and Culture
In Roman times, this area was well known for its outstanding port,
the remains of which can still be seen in La Mata, called
embarcadero romano, or Roman docks.
Along the coast are the ancient watchtowers called El Moro and La
Mata, used in the Middle Ages to warn the coastal inhabitants of
attacks by Barbary pitates.
Among the town monuments is the Archpriest's Church of the
Immaculate Conception, from the turn of the century, the masonry
bridge of the AcequiÓn and the Modernist Casino, with an original
Neo-Mudejar salon where numerous cultural activities are staged.
The Recinto de las Eras de la Sal is the site of the town's most
emblematic cultural manifestation: the International Habaneras and
Polyphony Event
Habaneras arrived in Spain through Torrevieja in the 19th century,
brought back by sailors from these lands in schooners used to
transport salt to Cuba. The Habaneras Event is held in the month of
August each year for an entire week, attracting the best national
and international choral groups to pay homage to this style of
Caribbean music.
Fiestas
Torrevieja's festive calendar starts in February with the happy
sounds of the Carnival heralding in the spring. Then come the solemn
Holy week processions up and down the streets of the town. In the
month May, in the Real de la Feria, Torreviejans dance sevillanas,
taste the finest sherries from the south, and enjoy riding on horse
back. In summer, there are outdoor parties and processions,
especially on 16 July, the feast day or Our Lady of Carmelo, the
patron saint of sailors, with a traditional sea-and-land procession.

Cuisine and Craftsmanship
The taste of the sea is reflected anew in local gastronomy, which
makes ample use of fish and seafood, in combination with produce
from local market gardens.
The most characteristic feature of local craftmanship are the models
of the boats used to transport salt in the marshes. Boat builders
take their creations to the edge of the salt flats, where they are
left to collect the bright glaze of the local salt, before being
offered as souvenirs.
Sports
Torrevieja has a superb line up for Sports lovers, especially for
people interested in Marine sports. The Royal Nautical Club and the
international Sports Marina offer over 1,500 berths for seafarers,
with a complete range of services for sailing , yachting and diving.
The Municipal Sports Pavilion has tennis courts, athletics tracks,
fronton tennis, a football field and a gymnasium.
What to do
Take a medicinal bath in the waters of the lagoon, which have
curative properties especially recommended for heart troubles,
rheumatism or respiratory ailments.
Participate in the numerous festivals held in Torrevieja. In August,
don't miss the Habeneras and Polyphony Event.
Stroll round the Street Market held every Friday morning and see
what there is to buy. In the evening, you can view the market stalls
for local craftsmanship near the port.
Visit the most important salt works in Europe and see one of the
most outstanding natural water preserves in the land of Valencia.
During the day, enjoy the sea and the sun along the beautiful
beaches near the town. Night time is the right time for enjoying
local Discos, Clubs and Cafes.
Visit the Holy Week Museum Tomas Valceral or the Museum of the Salt
and Sea.
Where to go
Take a boat ride to the island of Tabarca, where scuba diving is a
pleasure, or sail along the coast. There are boat rides from the
fishing port during the summer season.
Play a game of golf at one of the three 18-hole golf courses near
Torrevieja: Villamartin, Campoamor or Las Ramblas.
Drive up to Guardamar del Segura and enjoy a pleasant day's
excursion to a special eco-system: pine forests bordering sand dunes
next to Mediterranean.

The Northern Region
Moraira lies conveniently midway between the international airports
of Alicante and Valencia which are connected to all major European
airports. The luxury of a fine motorway connecting the two cities speeds
the way to this acknowledged beauty area of the Northern Costa Blanca.
